Most of the people in these frames have their backs to me. They're looking at something ,the sea, the length of a platform, a road going into fog ,and I'm standing behind them looking at them look. It never seemed right to ask anyone to turn around.
Black and white is less a style choice here than an admission. Color would tell you the time of year, what the water looked like that evening. Without it what's left is the shape of a person against something much larger than they are, which is the part I actually remember.
